Aniline, Lambskin, Suede and Waxed: A Complete Guide to Leather Types

What the leather in your jacket actually is, how it behaves, and why it matters for the long term.

Not all leather is the same. The type used in a jacket or vest shapes how it drapes, how it feels from day one, and what it looks like ten years from now. Choose the right leather and the piece becomes genuinely yours. Choose without knowing and you may end up with something that never quite fits what you wanted.

VOOLUP works with four primary leather types across its men's leather jackets, women's leather jackets, men's leather vests, and women's leather vests. Each has been selected for what it does best. This guide explains all four so you can make a confident, informed choice before you buy.

01

Aniline Leather

The natural finish. The living surface.

Aniline leather is processed using transparent aniline dyes that penetrate deep into the hide without coating the surface. Because no opaque finishing layer is applied, the natural grain, texture, and subtle markings of the original hide remain fully visible. This is what gives aniline leather its unmistakably organic, alive quality. Every panel is slightly different. Every jacket is technically unique.

The feel is noticeably soft from the start. Aniline-dyed hides are selected for quality because any surface irregularity is visible, which means the leather you receive has passed a higher threshold of selection. Over time, the surface builds a patina, a warm deepening of tone in areas that receive the most contact. The jacket becomes more itself with age, not less.

Aniline leather is used across the majority of VOOLUP's collection, including the Phantom Men's Moto Jacket, the Nightfall Women's Biker Jacket, the Stealth Men's Bomber Jacket, and the Bliss Noir Women's Bomber Jacket.

02

Lambskin Leather

The lightest touch. The most refined drape.

Lambskin is sourced from young sheep and sits among the finest leather types available. What distinguishes it immediately is its weight, or rather its absence. Lambskin jackets drape with a fluidity that heavier hides cannot replicate. The surface is exceptionally smooth and close-grained, giving a visual refinement that reads as luxury without announcing itself.

On the body, lambskin feels closer to a second skin than an outer layer. It conforms without resistance, moves naturally through the arms and shoulders, and lacks the stiffness that sometimes characterises thicker leather. For silhouettes built on a clean, sharp line, lambskin delivers where coarser hides fall short.

The Onyx Racer Men's Black Lambskin Leather Jacket is the purest expression of this leather in the VOOLUP range. The cafe racer cut and the lambskin construction work together in a way that no other hide could replicate.

Key Characteristics

Feel

Featherlight. Exceptionally smooth against the skin.

Appearance

Fine, close grain. Subtle sheen. Refined and precise.

Durability

Long-lasting with proper care. Lighter than full-grain hides.

Best For

Cafe racer silhouettes. Those who prioritise drape and softness.

03

Suede Leather

The textured surface. The seasonal depth.

Suede is made from the inner split of a hide, buffed until it develops a napped, velvety texture. Unlike the smooth outer surface of aniline or lambskin leather, suede has a tactile depth that changes subtly with light. It catches and holds light differently at every angle, making it visually dynamic in a way that smooth leather is not.

Suede is naturally softer and more flexible than hard-wearing outer-grain leathers, which makes it particularly well suited to bomber and trucker silhouettes where ease of movement matters. The texture also elevates colour. Deeper and more saturated tones, particularly maroon, brown, and caramel, read with exceptional richness on a suede surface.

VOOLUP suede pieces include the Marshal Men's Maroon Suede Jacket, the Luxe Sienna Women's Suede Bomber, the Canyon Lux Women's Brown Suede Trucker Jacket, and the Rory Men's Suede Quilted Vests.

04

Waxed Leather

The rugged finish. The outdoor character.

Nash Men's Black Waxed Leather Vest

Waxed leather begins as regular full-grain leather and is treated with a wax coating that penetrates the surface. The wax seals the hide, delivering enhanced weather resistance and a distinctive matte finish with a slight, purposeful sheen. Unlike smooth leather, a waxed surface shows marks and scuffs as a feature rather than damage. Crease lines and contact points develop a lighter, contrasting tone that reads as authentic character built over time.

The finish is heavier and more structured than aniline or lambskin, making waxed leather ideal for vests and outerwear where physical presence is the point. It holds its shape, accepts the marks of daily life without looking worn out, and can be re-waxed over time to restore its finish and extend its life.

The Nash Men's Black Waxed Leather Vest, Brown Waxed Leather Vest, and Grey Waxed Leather Vest are the clearest expressions of this material in the VOOLUP range, each featuring a stand collar and zip front that suit the structural quality of waxed leather perfectly.

Key Characteristics

Feel

Firm and structured. Breaks in gradually with wear.

Appearance

Matte finish. Scuffs and creases build visible character.

Durability

Highly durable. Naturally weather resistant. Re-waxable.

Best For

All-weather wear. Those who want leather that marks up with purpose.

The leather type you choose determines not just how a jacket looks on day one, but what it becomes over ten years of wear.

How to Choose the Right Leather Type

Choose aniline leather if you want leather that improves over time.

Aniline leather rewards regular wear and develops a personal patina that no two jackets share. It suits every style in the VOOLUP collection and works across all seasons. If you are uncertain which type to start with, aniline is the right choice.

Choose lambskin leather if weight and drape are the priority.

Lambskin is for anyone who wants their jacket to feel almost weightless and move like a second layer of clothing. The Onyx Racer is built for exactly this. See our leather jacket styling guide for outfit directions.

Choose suede if you want texture and rich seasonal colour.

Suede adds something smooth leather cannot: visual depth that changes with the light. It is strongest in autumn and winter and works especially well in the maroon and brown tones VOOLUP carries. Apply a suede protector spray before first wear. Our leather care guide covers suede maintenance in detail.

Choose waxed leather if durability and all-weather performance are the goal.

Waxed leather resists the elements better than any other type in this guide, takes on marks and creases as earned character, and can be re-waxed indefinitely. The Nash vest range is the natural starting point. If vests are new to you, the leather vest styling guide explains how to build a look around them.
