Where Real Leather Comes From: Sourcing, Tanning and the Case for Buying Better

An honest look at the hides, tanneries and grading standards behind every VOOLUP jacket and vest, and why one exceptional piece outlasts five disposable ones.

Introduction

Every VOOLUP tag says genuine leather. Almost none of them say where that leather began, who tanned it, or what happens to a hide between the animal it came from and the jacket hanging in your closet. That gap is where a lot of quiet dishonesty lives in outerwear: hides get vague grading, tanneries stay unnamed, and buyers are asked to take craftsmanship on faith.

We would rather show the work. This is a straightforward account of how we select hides, what tanning actually asks of the environment, and why the most sustainable jacket you can own is very often the one you already have and refuse to replace.

1. Where the Hide Begins

Leather is not the product a tannery sets out to make. It is a byproduct of the meat and dairy industry, recovered from hides that would otherwise go to landfill. That single fact shapes everything downstream: the leather trade does not exist to create demand for animals, it exists to keep an unavoidable material out of the waste stream and turn it into something built to last decades instead of days.

What varies enormously, hide to hide and supplier to supplier, is what happens next. A hide can be sanded, coated and printed with a fake grain to hide scars and disguise a thin, weak cut. Or it can be left closer to its natural state, an aniline or semi-aniline finish that keeps the grain visible and lets the leather age the way real leather is supposed to age. We buy toward the second option. Every VOOLUP jacket is cut from full grain or top grain hide, sourced for a natural surface rather than a manufactured one, because a coated hide might look fine on day one but it cracks, peels and dies years before real leather ever would.

For jackets, we favor supple sheep leather for its natural give and lighter hand feel. For vests, which take more daily friction and are built to sit under a bag strap or lean against a bike all day, we move to heavier cowhide and waxed finishes that are chosen specifically for abrasion resistance. The material always follows the job the garment has to do.

2. The Tannery Choice: What Chrome and Vegetable Tanning Actually Cost

Raw hide is unstable. Left untreated it will rot, so every piece of leather passes through a tannery before it becomes anything wearable. There are two dominant families of tanning, and the choice between them is one of the few genuine environmental trade-offs in this industry, not a simple case of one being right and one being wrong.

Chrome tanning

Chrome tanning is fast, produces a consistently soft and pliable hide, and is the process behind the majority of leather goods worldwide, including most of what we sell. Done responsibly, with wastewater treated before it leaves the facility and chromium recovered rather than discharged, it is a manageable process. Done irresponsibly, it is one of the more polluting steps in the entire supply chain. The difference between the two comes down entirely to which tannery you use, which is why our sourcing standard is simple: ask where the leather was tanned and whether the tannery treats its water. If a supplier cannot answer clearly, we do not work with them.

Vegetable tanning

Vegetable tanning uses tree bark and plant tannins instead of chromium salts, and it is genuinely gentler on wastewater. It is also slower, sometimes taking weeks rather than days, more labor intensive, and it produces a firmer, more structured hide that develops a deep, rich patina with wear. We use it selectively, on pieces like our waxed vests where that structure and aging character are part of the design intent.

Neither process is automatically the sustainable choice. A poorly run vegetable tannery can pollute just as badly as a poorly run chrome one. What matters is accountability, and that is what we screen for before a hide ever reaches a cutting table. 3. Longevity Is the Sustainability Metric That Actually Matters

It is easy to focus on what a material is made of and forget to ask how long it survives. A cheap synthetic jacket might use less resource-intensive inputs at the point of manufacture, but if it cracks, peels and heads to landfill within two winters, it has to be replaced two, three, four times over the lifespan of a single well-made leather piece. Each replacement carries its own manufacturing footprint, its own shipping footprint, its own eventual waste footprint. Durability is not just a comfort claim. It is the single biggest lever a garment has over its own environmental cost.

Real leather, cared for properly, does not have an expiration date the way synthetics do. It develops a patina instead of falling apart. Scuffs and creases become character rather than damage. A jacket bought today can reasonably be expected to outlive a trend cycle, outlive a decade, and in many cases outlive the person who bought it, passed down rather than thrown out. That is the case for buying one exceptional piece instead of five disposable ones, and it is the reason we price our jackets and vests as investment pieces rather than seasonal ones.

4. What We Look for in Every Hide

Sourcing standards only mean something if they show up in the finished product, so here is what we are actually checking for before a hide becomes a VOOLUP jacket or vest.

Natural grain over corrected grain. We look for hides where the surface has not been sanded down and reprinted to hide flaws. A visible, slightly irregular grain is a sign of a genuine, unaltered surface, not a defect.

Aniline and semi-aniline finishing. Lighter finishing means less coating sits between you and the actual leather, which is why our jackets develop character instead of staying plastic-stiff for their entire life.

The right weight for the job. Sheep leather for jackets that need to move with the body, cowhide and waxed leather for vests that take daily abrasion. Traceable tanning. Every hide we buy can be traced back to a named tannery. Unnamed, unverifiable supply chains do not make it into our catalog, regardless of price.

5. Buying Better, Not More

None of this is about pretending leather has zero footprint. Every material has one. What we can control is how honestly that footprint is disclosed and how hard the finished piece works to justify it. A hide recovered from an existing supply chain, tanned by an accountable facility, cut into a jacket or vest built to be worn for decades and repaired rather than replaced, is about as close as outerwear gets to a genuinely sustainable choice.

The most useful thing we can tell you as a buyer is the same thing we tell ourselves as a maker: buy fewer pieces, buy them well made, and keep them long enough to earn their patina. That is the standard every hide has to meet before it becomes a VOOLUP jacket or vest.
